Description
When the New River Gorge Arch Bridge was built in 1977 it replaced this bridge. The old route you had to take down the side of the gorge and cross the New River on this bridge and then back up the other side of the gorge would take about 45 minutes with all the switchbacks down and up the mountain gorge. The Arch Bridge has cut the 45 minute trip down to a 45 second drive. The Arch Bridge is 3,030 feet long and 876 feet above the New River. The old route is now just a one way drive, but well worth the drive, and no extended vehicles or trailers are permitted.
